What You Need to Learn to Drive

✔ Provisional Licence

  • Be at least 15 years 9 months old
  • Can read a number plate from 20m away
  • Provide valid ID & 3 years of addresses
  • Pay £34 fee

Who Can Supervise a Learner Driver?

  • Be at least 21 (25 for Tempcover)
  • Hold a full licence for 3+ years
  • Not banned from driving
  • Qualified for the vehicle type (manual/auto)

Learner Driver Car Requirements

Roadworthy

Must be taxed and have a valid MOT.

L Plates

Red “L” (or “D” in Wales) on front and rear, visible at all times.

Annual Insurance

Vehicle must be covered even if not owned by learner.

Minimum Eyesight Requirements

  • Read a number plate from 20m (20.5m for old plates).
  • Visual acuity at least 0.5 (6/12) on Snellen scale.
  • Glasses or lenses allowed if needed.

Can a learner driver drive alone?

No — they must be supervised by a qualified driver at all times.

Can learners drive on motorways?

Only with an approved instructor in a dual-controlled car. Otherwise, fines of up to £1,000 + 6 penalty points apply.

Can learners drive at night?

Yes, provided they have valid insurance and a qualified supervisor.
